Sustainable Design

Miralles Associates, Inc, a U.S. Green Building Council [USGBC] Member Firm, is known as a leader in the field of energy-efficient design. Our commitment is to reduce total energy requirements, consumption and dependence on fossil fuels.

Since our inception more than 35-years ago, sustainable design techniques, including passive energy saving systems, have been continuously used by the MAI staff and championed by Adolfo E. Miralles, FAIA, Founder.

MAI wrote the First Energy Conservation Standard for the County of San Bernardino in the 1970's, as well as an Energy Conservation Study for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s [LADWP’s] Canoga Park Service Center and its associated warehouse. Even back then, our report identified maximum uses of day lighting, energy storage and shading devices. MAI feels strongly about an architect's obligation to promote the inclusion and implementation of such features.

MAI demonstrates its deep commitment through membership in the U.S. Green Building Council [USGBC] and participation in the City of Pasadena’s Green Building Program, Green Ribbon Committee. The USGBC is recognized for developing the national conformance guidelines, through the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design [LEED®] program. Currently we have four Leed® Accredited Professionals on staff.

Involved in the design of nine buildings featuring LEED® and California High Performance School [CHPS] programs to date, MAI expands upon these green building and sustainable design principles. At present, MAI Architects has been commissioned by the City of Thousand Oaks for the Transportation Administration Building, the first LEED® Certified project in Ventura County.

MAI additionally provides energy efficient benefits beyond those required by the State of California Title 24 energy compliance, for example, at the Jackson Elementary School; completed in 2004. Based on a decrease in energy consumption and estimated annual savings, the Pasadena Unified School District [PUSD] meets and qualifies for incentives from the local power company.
