04.01.07 | Q2 Paving the Way in 2007 - Community Outreach, Volunteerism and Related Activities

"Paving the Way" is more about recognizing and promoting strident dedication in bringing about "care in practice", even when the client / community stakes are high. Click here to link to more specific information on our firm philosophy.

MAI is currently working with the City of Thousand Oaks and all its constituents on the Community Transportation Center Administration Building Project where we presented design alternatives to the neighboring community. Concerns over context and fit with the architecture of the surrounding neighborhood were eased by presenting design alternatives that evoked a residential scale. MAI has also reshaped the City’s policy by spending time with City staff, coordinating and holding workshops to discuss the benefits of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and green building practices. By “taking the building green” the LEED design package is now submitted to USGBC. Once completed, this project will be the first municipal building in Ventura County with LEED Certification.

With several awards since our inception, January 2007 brought our most recent AIA San Fernando Valley [AIA SFV] “Best Community Design Award” for the Encino Water Quality Improvement Project with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power [LADWP]. Recognition is for “Design Excellence and Community Outreach” achieved through an extensive 10-year process with the local community. Read more about this on our “Home” and “Community Outreach” web pages.

“At the AIA San Fernando Valley, we have a great deal of pride in our heritage and in our commitment to continue to strengthen the quality of the built environment...Your projects represent the best examples of respect for the welfare of the community by providing an outstanding model of the AIA motto “Good design makes a difference.” - Mr. Russell E. Myers, AIA, Chair of AIA SFV, BCD Awards 2007

With construction completing this summer, the Evergreen Recreation Center - Child Care Center project will be engaging for the community of Boyle Heights, District2, Los Angeles. MAI conducted three City LVNOC meetings to discuss design and successfully resolved prior program issues during 2005 and early-2006; leading to a long-awaited resolution and commencement of the construction. The center will provide the community with classroom space for up to 50 children within Evergreen Park and adjacent to the Dodgers Dream Field. Read more about this on our “Home” projects page.
